In today’s digital landscape, social media is a powerful platform—one that can inspire, connect, and encourage others in faith. As a former NFL linebacker, college football broadcaster, and someone who has found his greatest purpose in serving Christ, Greg Coleman has seen firsthand how the messages we share can echo far beyond the screen. Our online presence is an extension of our witness, and as believers, it’s crucial that we approach social media with intentionality, humility, and a heart for positive influence.

1. Reflect the Light: Share with Purpose

Before sharing, ask yourself: Does this uplift, encourage, or offer hope? Our online actions should mirror our faith, guiding others toward truth and grace. Remember, sometimes the most powerful influence comes not from preaching, but from modeling kindness, patience, and integrity.

2. Practice Modesty in Words and Images

Modesty isn’t just about how we dress—it’s about the spirit and tone we convey. In a world that often rewards oversharing and sensationalism, choose to use your voice and images to honor God and respect others. Post content that is true, good, and beautiful. Avoid gossip, divisiveness, and anything that could cause a brother or sister to stumble. Modesty in communication shows a quiet strength and deep respect for both yourself and your audience.

3. Be Quick to Listen, Slow to Speak, Slow to Anger

James 1:19 reminds us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” Social media can easily become a battleground for arguments and misunderstandings. Instead, strive to be a peacemaker. Listen to understand. Respond with wisdom, and don’t be afraid to step away from heated debates. Ask God for discernment before you respond, and let your words be seasoned with grace.

4. Guard Your Heart—and Your Time

Social media is designed to capture your attention, but as Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Set healthy boundaries. If scrolling leaves you feeling anxious, jealous, or discontent, take a break. Prioritize real-life relationships and time with God. Use your platforms as tools for good, not as substitutes for genuine connection or spiritual growth.

5. Use Your Platform to Serve

You don’t have to be a celebrity or influencer to make a difference. Every follower is a soul God loves. Use your online presence to serve others—share encouraging verses, support local ministries, highlight acts of kindness, or simply offer a listening ear. Social media is a mission field; every interaction is a chance to plant seeds of hope and faith.

6. Lead by Example—On and Off the Field

As someone who has been blessed with a public platform through football and broadcasting, I understand the responsibility that comes with influence. Whether you have ten followers or ten thousand, people are watching. Lead by example. Apologize when you’re wrong. Forgive freely. Celebrate others’ successes. Show humility in both victory and defeat. Let your authenticity point others to the source of your strength—Jesus Christ.

7. Pray Before You Post

Before you hit “send,” take a moment to pray. Ask God for wisdom, humility, and courage. Sometimes the best post is the one you never make. Trust that God can use even your silence for His glory. When you do share, let it be from a place of love, faith, and a desire to build others up.

Leverage Social Media for Good

Social media is a tool—one that can be used for good or for harm. As followers of Christ, we are called to be salt and light in every space, including the digital world. Let your presence online be marked by modesty, wisdom, and a steadfast commitment to honoring God in all you do.
